The Druze books teach that God, who cannot be grasped by the senses or defined in words, has appeared to people at various times in human form, last as the Fatimid caliph al-Ḥākim bi-Amr Allāh at the start of the fifth century AH; that al-Ḥākim disappeared in 411 AH to test the faithful; and that he will return to triumph over his enemies.

They teach that the number of human beings is always the same and that souls pass successively into different bodies; that believers must keep Ḥamza's seven commandments, chiefly truthfulness, charity towards fellow believers, renunciation of their former religion, and submission to God's will; and that all earlier religions were imperfect figures of the true one, whose ritual laws are allegories now abrogated.
